Candles of Song: Yiddish Poems about Mothers (Zoom)
Monday, May 18, 2020 • 24 Iyyar 5780
7:30 PM - 8:30 PMAlthough Mother’s Day isn’t specifically a Jewish holiday mothers are certainly important in Jewish life. Join Sheva Zucker for a belated Mother’s Day session in which we will look at some Yiddish poems about mothers (in English translation). The poems speak of mother-child relationships (from both angles), love and rebellion, the changing relationship to Jewish tradition, survival during the Holocaust, the sadness of watching a parent grow senile and much more. After her own mother died Sheva created a blog called “Candles of Song: Yiddish Poems about Mothers” – shevazucker.com/blog in which these poems and many more can be found in Yiddish, English and transliteration. Poems will be provided at the session. Let us know if you would like to see them beforehand. No knowledge of Yiddish is required.
